As many of you know, the Pacific Falcons was originally formed to provide a top tier travel lacrosse option for dedicated girls lacrosse players in Orange County and San Diego. Our first national team was formed in the spring of 2009 and was highlighted by a trip to the U15 Nationals in Baltimore, Md. We learned quickly that lacrosse in CA is very different than lacrosse in NY, MD, or Washington DC. We adapted our style of play and the next year we returned to the USL U15 Nationals & took 3rd place (our only loss came in the semi-finals to the eventual National Champion, Long Island Yellow Jackets). The original Pacific Falcons players are now in college - 15 of whom are playing D1 lacrosse at schools such as Cal, SDSU, Denver, Colorado, UC Davis, Fresno State, Oregon, Syracuse, North Carolina, Boston Univ., Michigan, Navy, and Bryant. There are just as many founding players getting a top education and playing D2/D3/club lacrosse at Grand Valley State, Wingate, Rhodes, Ft Lewis, CMS, UCLA, UCSB, South Carolina, Oregon State, Washington, and Concordia. It is great to see our club return to its roots, for many of our national team rosters now feature top Orange County players traveling with their San Diego teammates to compete at national recruiting events.

Recently we were made aware of changes in Orange County that may have left players looking for a top quality, club lacrosse option. The Pacific Falcons are not looking to expand our program because there are players available - rather we want to ensure that lacrosse continues to develop at a high level in the region. Recent results at national level events (including UnderArmor, NT, and national recruiting tournaments) highlight the fact that  the So CA growth of club lacrosse has not resulted in advanced play from the region. In fact, one could argue that misunderstanding/false promises of scholarships has fueled club growth in the short run, but has resulted in a general decline in total off season lacrosse participation across the region. It is true that most of the players in the Pacific Falcons program do play in college, but we are crystal clear in setting expectations. Paying fees and wearing a jersey do not lead to success – the players have to put in the work and the coaches have to CARE. We believe there needs to be a strong regional travel option in OC for players that want to advance their skills above and beyond local club programs. I firmly subscribe to the basic tenet that their are 4 tiers of lacrosse participation at the HS level:

Tier 4 - HS athletics only
·         Players looking to represent HS and enjoy athletics
·         Multi sport athletes
Tier 3 - Local Club
·         Players that play in advance of HS season (fall/winter ball)
·         Some players desire to play a limited summer schedule following CIF play
Tier 2 - Regional Club
·         Players that desire to play beyond HS, but not interested in national travel
·         Most players compete on varsity team
·         Some travel, but majority of events in immediate So CA area
Tier 1 - National Travel Club –
·         Players seeking to play collegiate lacrosse at NCAA level
·         Top regional players – NT team member, Varsity as frosh, ALL CIF

After looking carefully (and critically) at our programs infrastructure, we believe we can offer a quality tier 2 regional travel club program to players in Orange County. For those that show the dedication and aptitude there is a path to joining one of our tier 1 programs. The emphasis of our summer program in OC will be skill development, as well as providing advanced lacrosse playing opportunities. The events selected will offer exposure to regional collegiate programs (D1 - MPSF, as well as D3 and collegiate club programs), but this is not an offering with a focus on recruiting. Our initial plan is to field 2 HS teams and 1 MS team based in Orange County. The teams will have 8 field sessions in OC from late May- early July, as well as 6 sessions in San Diego with the main Pacific Falcons program (see below). The players will be coached by the Pacific Falcons staff, and I have begun a search for top coaches in the OC area. I personally plan to be at every OC session barring any last minute work commitments outside CA. Again, if players are interested in pursuing national recruiting events/travel at the conclusion of this program, there are several options available to join the Pacific Falcons National Teams at targeted events (eg U15 Nationals and/or other IWLCA events as roster spots allow).
